It’s time for quality over quantity…

The season is still in progress and with the title too close to call, thoughts of next season might seem far away, but it’s one that should be in everyone’s mind especially those running the club, no matter the destination of the title.

We need quality players in the door, that isn’t in doubt. Ironically if the club had backed the manager fully in the last two transfer windows, then we most likely wouldn’t be in a title fight at this stage and we would be in a far more comfortable position.

Let’s not kid ourselves on, we need quality in the door, proven quality if we want to move forward as a club especially on the European front. To do that we need to spend big, around £20 – £25 million and not just on average low price players, but for  quality signings. We should be spending big on three or four first team ready players, not projects or bench fillers, but quality experienced players.

A goalkeeper, left back, centre back, and centre forward should be the upmost priority. Players who can come in and make an impact from the word go. It’s what should have been done at the start of the season.

Regardless the outcome of the title, and the guaranteed bounty of Champions League cash, we can still afford it. We have recorded record profits, we are due a substantial sell on fee for the expected sale of Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong. We will most likely move a player on for big money, not to mention the various other sources of income streaming into the club.

It’s time for those in charge to loosen the purse strings if they have any serious ambitions for the club going forward. If not there could be serious grumblings ahead.
